How AI guidance should be verified on construction sites
A safety-first framework for treating AI output as supporting information rather than controlling authority.
Identify the controlling authority
Before acting, determine which current code, engineered document, manufacturer instruction, approved procedure, permit condition, safety program, or supervisor direction controls the work. AI output cannot override it.
Check the source and the context
Confirm that the cited material applies to the equipment, jurisdiction, site condition, task, and date involved. Similar-looking work can have different requirements.
Escalate uncertainty
Stop and seek qualified review when a response conflicts with site documentation, lacks a relevant source, concerns a safety-critical decision, or falls outside the worker’s authorization and competence.
- Never use AI output as a permit or approval
- Do not bypass lockout, inspection, or sign-off requirements
- Record corrections so unreliable guidance is not repeated
